Active Tables allows designers to stay in InDesign and not have to go back to Numbers, Excel or other program to edit the source, compromising the layout quality and making the workflow less efficient. InDesign 1.5 also introduced the eye-dropper tool that allows at least to retrieve the color of an imported picture by example in order to use exactly the same color in a shape or in the text. You can also sort and move columns and rows, even change rows to columns or columns to rows. Formulas can process text and conditions, such as adjust tax amount on the invoice automatically based on the customer location. InDesign 1.5 comes with a new function that allows you to resize ellipses and rectangles from a center point. For example, Active Tables brings Excel-like formulas to InDesign, so you can add a column of numbers. Active Tables plug-in is sold for US79 per license. Now it’s in InDesign: The main problem in Photoshop is that it’s slow to open far slower than the older legacy New dialog box. And don’t expect the numeric information inside a table (linked to a spreadsheet or not) to be part of a formula. Active Tables allows designers to stay in InDesign and not have to go back to Numbers, Excel or other program to edit the source. You can either have sticky formatting or dynamic contents, not both. One problem with an InDesign table is that if its contents are linked to the original Excel file, any formatting you’ve added in InDesign disappears when someone updates the linked spreadsheet.
